Winter Pet Safety Tips: Protecting Your Dog on the Chesapeake Bay

Winter in the Chesapeake Bay region is a beautiful season filled with crisp air, sparkling snow, and festive adventures—perfect for pet-friendly activities and creating cherished memories with your furry companions. But for our furry friends, it’s also a time when extra care is needed to keep them safe and comfortable. Tica the Golden Retriever, the Brad Kappel Team’s beloved Chief Happiness Officer, is here to share her top winter tips for all the Bay pups out there. Whether you’re exploring waterfront trails or snuggling by the fire, these tips will ensure your pet stays happy and healthy all season long.

1. Protect Those Paws 🐾

Salt, ice, and freezing temperatures can be tough on a pup’s paws. Tica recommends applying a pet-safe paw balm before heading out for a walk to create a protective barrier against the elements. For an added layer of protection, consider dog booties to prevent cracked pads and irritation from salt or ice melt. Don’t forget to wipe your pup’s paws clean after every walk to remove any harmful chemicals they might have picked up. Consider shopping locally at Seadog Pet Boutique for some cold-weather essentials.

2. Cozy Up in Style 🧥

Short-haired pups, senior dogs, or pets who aren’t used to the cold may need a little extra help staying warm. Tica loves her winter coat, which keeps her snug and stylish during her outdoor adventures. When choosing a coat for your dog, make sure it fits comfortably and covers their back and belly. For extra chilly days, a sweater can also do the trick.

3. Stay Hydrated 💦

Even in winter, staying hydrated is important for your dog’s health. Cold air can be just as dehydrating as summer heat, especially after a brisk walk or play session in the snow. Always ensure your pet has access to fresh water at home and on the go. If your pup is spending time outdoors, check that their water bowl hasn’t frozen over.

4. Watch the Temps ⛄

While Tica loves her outdoor adventures, she knows that extreme cold can be dangerous. Limit time spent outside during freezing weather, especially for puppies, senior dogs, or breeds sensitive to the cold. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, lethargy, or whining. If you notice any of these, bring your pup indoors immediately and warm them up gradually.

5. Snow Safety First ❄️

Snow can be a lot of fun for dogs, but it’s important to be mindful of safety. Tica enjoys romping through fresh snow, but she’s careful not to eat too much of it. Snow can contain harmful chemicals, debris, or road salt that’s unsafe for pets. Always supervise your dog during snow play and keep their winter adventures safe and enjoyable.

Bonus Tip: Keep the Holidays Pet-Friendly

Winter also brings holiday celebrations, which can introduce additional hazards for pets. Be mindful of decorations, holiday foods, and gatherings that might cause stress or pose risks to your furry friend. Tica’s advice? Create a quiet, cozy spot where your dog can relax during holiday festivities.
