Your Chesapeake Bay Fall Guide: Scenic Trails, Bike Rides & Waterfront Views

Looking for a fall outing near Annapolis or Maryland’s Eastern Shore? Start with a woodland walk, a bike ride across Kent Island, or a morning exploring the wetlands near Easton.

Anne Arundel, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot counties offer plenty of ways to spend time outdoors as the leaves change. Pair your adventure with lunch, local shopping, or a waterfront stroll to make a full day of it.

Here are a few places to add to your fall itinerary.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY: WOODED TRAILS AND WATERFRONT WALKS

Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis

For a relaxed fall walk close to downtown Annapolis, head to Quiet Waters Park. Between the South River and Harness Creek, the park offers paved trails through the woods and places to pause along the waterfront.

Follow the paths through the forest, then visit the South River Overlook. It’s a good choice when you want a scenic outing without committing to a more demanding hike.

Make a day of it: Spend your morning at the park, then head into Eastport or Historic Downtown Annapolis for lunch and a waterfront walk.

Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary in Lothian

For a different view of southern Anne Arundel County, visit Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. Woodland trails and marsh boardwalks introduce you to the tidal wetlands along the Patuxent River.

Explore the 2.2-mile Otter Loop, including the Marsh Boardwalk, which connects the visitor center to the loop. Take your time at the overlooks to watch for birds and photograph the marsh landscape.

Plan your visit: The main sanctuary opens Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. During December through February, it closes on Sundays. Pets and bicycles are prohibited at the main sanctuary.

QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY: A FALL BIKE RIDE ON KENT ISLAND

Cross Island Trail

Bring your bike or walking shoes to the Cross Island Trail. This Kent Island route in Stevensville passes through woods, meadows, and farmland, with bridges crossing creeks and wetlands.

Choose a section for a leisurely outing or plan a longer ride. Stop along the creek crossings for water views and seasonal photos. Public parking is available at several access points, including Terrapin Nature Park and the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center.

Make a day of it: Add a walk at Terrapin Nature Park, then head to Kent Narrows for lunch by the water. Build the day around your pace, whether you want more time on the trail or more time overlooking the water.

TALBOT COUNTY: NATURE TRAILS, EASTON, AND ST. MICHAELS

Pickering Creek Audubon Center Near Easton

Start your Talbot County outing at Pickering Creek Audubon Center. More than five miles of walking trails wind through a landscape featuring hardwood forest, restored wetlands, and creek access.

The center’s autumn trail guide offers a seasonal introduction to the wetland loop. Bring your camera and binoculars, and allow time to stop at the viewing platforms. Leave bikes and pets at home. Pickering Creek reserves its trails for walking and protects wildlife through its pet restrictions, with an exception for service animals.

Make a day of it: After your walk, browse downtown Easton’s shops and galleries. Then drive to St. Michaels for a stroll along Talbot Street and dinner near the harbor.

For a shorter nature outing, consider the 1.3-mile St. Michaels Nature Trail. The route passes through trees, fields, neighborhoods, and a covered bridge, making it an easy addition to your town visit.

PREFER A FALL PADDLE?

Explore the season from your kayak or paddleboard.

In Annapolis, Truxtun Park provides public launch access to Spa Creek. For a Patuxent River outing around Jug Bay, launch your own craft at Patuxent Wetlands Park or Wootons Landing. The main Jug Bay sanctuary does not provide a public put-in. Check wind, tides, water temperature, and daylight before choosing your route.

PLAN YOUR NEXT FALL OUTING

Choose a trail, leave time to explore a nearby town, and check park hours before heading out. Fall color varies by location and weather, so consult Maryland’s latest foliage report when planning your visit.
